Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider is launching for the Sony PlayStation 4, and in celebration of 20 years of Lara Croft, can be purchased with an art book. How cool is that? As a lifelong Tomb Raider myself (having played TR1 all the way back in about 1997), I couldn’t be more thrilled! The book includes work by the Crystal Dynamics team, as well as fans of the series — including winners of the #TombRaider20 community art contest (of whom I’m one!). So pick up your copy today!

My entry is called “Alchemy”, and was both frustrating and fun to create. Having loved the series since I was about 8, it was a big deal to me to create something that did the character and my feelings some justice.

About “Alchemy”, the team behind the contest wrote, “With a smoking gun in hand, this portrayal of Lara demonstrates a skilled use of color contrasts and posing. Her stature and expression give off a sense that Lara’s strength is never to be put in question. While well-regarded for her stunts and dynamic moves, the simplicity of [Donavan] Neil’s “Alchemy” seems to point to Lara’s inner-convictions being one of the most significant characteristics. Up close, the art shows off intense orange and red highlights in the background which seem to symbolize “the fire within” – an inner ambition to push the limits of the human spirit – being a driving factor in who Lara is, and will continue to be for years to come.”
